The Upper School experience begins with the Freshman Orientation Adventure in ninth grade and a unifying Senior Retreat in twelfth. By Commencement, the Upper School student has developed leadership skills, an understanding of self and others, respect for spirituality and the ability to embrace challenge while living a balanced life.

ESJ Upper School students experience a stimulating environment which is intellectually rigorous, yet full of support and encouragement. Episcopal offers more than 100 courses in nine academic areas.

Before graduating, each student must complete a comprehensive program that includes English, mathematics, science, social studies, physical education, world languages, religion, computer science, and fine arts. A wide selection of honors and advanced placement courses are offered in each discipline, as well as independent study options in theology and sciences, and interdisciplinary studies in the humanities.

Episcopal students are academically focused and hardworking, as well as inquisitive and truth-seeking. Our students understand that education and effort are keys to future successes. Every year they participate in a variety of scholastic competitions, including International Science fairs and state Thespian festivals, and enjoy a reputation for superior achievement at the local, state, and national levels.

In addition, many Episcopal students enhance their experience here by participating in a variety of corollary programs such as fine arts trips to Chicago or New York City, Joe Berg seminars, international exchange and foreign language study abroad, or trips to university science laboratories.
