Visual Arts

The visual-arts program at Episcopal emphasizes creative problem-solving through the production of artwork utilizing various media. Our studio facilities are equipped to provide instruction in many disciplines: drawing, painting, photography, printmaking, and ceramics. Art history is also offered as a field of study.

Honors and Advanced Placement classes are available in all disciplines. Our excellent artist/teaching faculty strives to foster new ways of seeing, competence in production, and an awareness of the context of art in our environment. The Berg Gallery in the Munnerlyn Center for Worship and Fine Arts provides gallery space for rotating student, faculty and alumni exhibits.

Studio art 1 through Studio Art 4 are offered on a semester basis to complete the fine-arts requirement for track students; these classes include all the 2D disciplines. Honors Portfolio provides the year-long opportunity for students to prepare a portfolio for college application. Advanced Placement Portfolio is offered to students by teacher recommendation as a full-year elective course to be evaluated for college credit on the national level.

Our comprehensive photography program includes semester courses Photography 1 and Photography 2, and full-year courses Advanced Photography and Advanced Placement Photography. Studio and lab facilities provide state-of-the-art equipment for both film and digital instruction.

Ceramics 1 through 4 are offered as semester courses, introducing the student to hand-building techniques, and progressing to wheel-throwing. Firing and glazing methods are also presented. Honors and Advanced Placement 3D Studio are offered as year-long courses, with an emphasis on developing a cohesive body of work communicating meaningful ideas. These classes also provide students the opportunity to prepare a portfolio for college application and evaluation for college credit on the national level.

The Middle School visual-arts program offers classes as part of the rotating quarter system. Students in grades six through eight learn about the elements of design and various artists' styles through several media, and present their own works in a quarterly exhibit. The Middle School Art Club is available throughout the year.
