Episcopal Summer Camp & Course Descriptions

368 Simulation/Game Design (.5 credit)

In this foundation course for simulation and game design, students will get a thorough introduction to game and simulation concepts, careers, the impact simulations and games have on society and industry, and basic simulation/game design concepts. Topics include historical elements of the industry, creating a new world through storytelling, management and design elements for simulations and games. Hands-on activities using Adobe Flash and Game Maker 8 are integrated into the cirriculum. Students interested in game development, graphic design, interactive design, animation, computer programming, web development, entertainment studies, communication and emerging technologies would find this course beneficial.

This course is open to rising 10th through 12th graders.  Prerequisites for this course include Algebra 1 and Computer Applications 1, or Computer 1 and 2 in the Middle School at Episcopal, or approval of the department chair.

Life Management (.5 credit)

Life Management is a required course which includes decision-making skills and scientific information to help students develop healthy life styles as adolescents and as adults. Students will study topics on emotional, physiological, and psychological development as well as the factors which contribute to healthy living. The course includes a comprehensive sexuality and drug-prevention unit. To counter daily pressures, the course will synthesize the spiritual, physiological, and psychological basis from which to make healthy decisions.

Photography 1 (.5 credit)

This is a survey course which covers fundamentals of traditional and digital photography. Students will learn 35mm-camera controls, film exposure, film development, traditional darkroom techniques, matting and framing, digital-image marking, digital-image manipulation with Adobe PhotoShop, digital printmaking, and the history of aesthetics of photography.

This class is open to all rising 10th through 12th graders.

Photography 2 (.5 credit)

Photography 2 expands the students’ experiences with advance process and materials. Students are challenged to explore personal means of creative expression. A final portfolio of ten exhibition-quality prints will be due at the conclusion of the course.

This class is open to all Upper School students who have completed Photography 1.

Public Speaking (.5 credit)

This course is a study in communication. It includes conversation, multi-media presentation, critical analysis, speaking in a multi-cultural world, speaking to inform and persuade, speaking extemporaneously, business protocol, and ethical speaking. Students will learn to communicate effectively, speaking with purpose, and selecting audience- appropriate topics as they organize their ideas. They will learn to research and gather materials from a variety of sources, including personal interview, the Internet, and the library.

This class is open to rising 10th through 12th graders.

Studio Art 1 (.5 credit)

Studio art 1 is an introductory art class which emphasizes a wide range of drawing techniques and materials. Students will learn basic drawing principles, including line, mass, value and composition. Students will work from direct observation, still life and printed materials, and are introduced to printmaking and watercolor.

Studio Art 2 (.5 credit)

Studio Art 2 is a continuation of the basic skills learned in Studio Art 1. Students will learn elements of color theory and mixture, and will explore various printing materials, including watercolor and acrylics.

Theology 1 (.5 credit)

Reading the Bible involves understanding God’s ways and humanity’s weakness. We will use the Bible text and classical literature, hand in hand, in pursuit of things that are true. This semester’s focus is on the foundations of Genesis and Exodus, the classical doctrines of historical Christianity, and a close study of the Epistle to the Romans and St. John’s Gospel. Our goal is to develop a healthy faith perspective, upheld by consistent critical thinking and a clear understanding of Jesus Christ.

This class is open to rising 11th and 12th graders.

Theology 2 (.5 credit)

In this semester students will develop the Biblical and literary themes uncovered in theology 1. Continuing the reading and exploration of Biblical texts, the course examines application of the principles of the faith to the circumstances of cotemporary life. A closes study of St. Luke’s Gospel and the Book of Acts, in conjunction with readings from Dietrich Bonhoeffer and other classical authors, forms the basis for us to address the challenges and opportunities of living as genuine Christians in the fallen world.

This class is open to rising 11th and 12th graders.

Algebra 1 Prep

This class will review the major concepts to be covered in Algebra 1, allowing for a better understanding of the concepts when they are introduced later in the regular school year. This class is excellent for the student who feels they need a better understanding of basic algebraic concepts before they are officially covered later in the year.This class is open to all students, but is mostly directed towards students who will be taking Algebra 1 during the regular school year.

Algebra 2 Prep

This class will review the major concepts to be covered in Algebra 2 and Honors Algebra 2. The study of polynomial, rational, radical, and exponential functions are all introduced, along with the skills needed to better execute more challenging word problems.

Driver’s Education

Run by Able Driving School of Jacksonville, students will complete 28 hours of classroom work, and then complete six hours of actual behind the wheel instruction with a state certified instructor. Topics covered will include lane-changing, defensive driving, and general skills needed to pass the state road test. Also included in the classroom instruction is the drug and alcohol education component as required by the state of Florida.

This class is open to anyone 15 and older.

Middle School English Review

This review course is offered to students who require a better understanding of concepts and strategies covered at the middle school level. This class will satisfy the school requirements of remediation for any student who receives a grade lower than a C- for the second semester of English 7 or English 8.

Upper School English Review

This review course is offered to students who require a better understanding of concepts and strategies covered at the upper school level. This class will satisfy the school requirements of remediation for any student who receives a grade lower than a C- for the second semester of English 9, 10, or 11.

Geometry Prep

This class will review the major concepts to be covered in Geometry 1. Skills required for critical-thinking, logical reasoning, and problem-solving through proof-writing will be introduced, along with a review of the algebraic skills needed to be successful.This class is open to all students, but is mostly directed towards students who will be taking Geometry during the regular school year.

Grammar Prep

This class will teach the basic parts of speech that are necessary to master prior to entering the Episcopal English classroom. This course is paramount for those with a weak or non-existent grammar background. Grammar Prep is open to all students, but is primarily intended for those rising 7th, 8th, or 9th graders who are new to Episcopal who do not have a strong grammar base.

Greek Mythology

This course will explore various myths from around the world, examine how these myths have influenced Hollywood films, and give students the opportunity to write and produce their own short mythology films.

Middle School Building Bridges

The Middle School Bridges experience provides new sixth-through-eighth-grade students a jump start on the school year. This is a four-day experience to introduce new students to one another and orient them to the Episcopal culture and campus with plenty of games and activities.

Middle School Study Skills

The study-skills course gives students various tools to use during the school year in order to be more successful. The course focuses on reading comprehension strategies, note-taking skills, organizational skills, test-taking strategies, building vocabulary, and time management. Students should bring a drink and a small snack for the break.

Intro to Photography

Over the course of one week, we as a group will develop a basic understanding of composition, design and concept in relation to the medium of photography. We will explore basic shooting and Photoshop techniques which will allow us to develop a strong series of photographs. We will also spend a day learning about the chemical process of photography by making photograms.

Pre-Algebra Prep

This class will review the major concepts to be covered in Pre-Algebra, allowing for a better understanding of the concepts when they are introduced later in the regular school year. This class is open to all students, but is mostly directed towards students who will be taking Pre-Algebra during the regular school year.

SAT Prep Math

This week long course is intended for the student who is looking to improve his or her score on the quantitative section of the SAT. Emphasis will be placed not only on content and type of questions asked, but also on strategies and test-taking skills.

SAT Prep Verbal

This course has been designed to hone the verbal test-taking skills primarily of students taking the SAT exam for the second time.  Each class will include a practice test, review of previous practice tests, and a discussion of test-taking strategies.  The course will cover the central skills necessary for success on the Critical Reading section (sentence completions and passage-based analysis) and the Writing Section (improving sentences and paragraphs, identifying sentence errors and writing a clear, coherent essay).

Baseball Camp - Coach Mike Jones

This camp will be a full instructional camp concentrating on throwing form, defensive fundamentals, base running, hitting fundamentals, and pitching and catching mechanics. This year, baseball camp will be broken out by position, with pitchers and catchers together and infield and outfield together over a two day period. 

Boys Basketball Camp- Coach Chip Stroud

The basketball camp at Episcopal School of Jacksonville will be for players in grades 3 - 10.  We will emphasize improvement of fundamental skills such as shooting, passing, rebounding, and dribbling. We will also incorporate the proper understanding of the team concept with team defense, 3 on 3, and 5 on 5 game situations.  The hope is that you will walk away with the desire to continue to train and work on the game of basketball during the off season.

Boys Basketball Camp – Coach Jeff Tranovich

This camp will focus on the fundamentals of basketball. The players will work on dribbling with both hands, correct techniques of passing, and correct form when shooting. They will be introduced to different styles of defense and participate in daily scrimmages.

Girls Basketball- Coach Rachel Mitchell

This camp will focus on the fundamentals of basketball. Players will work on dribbling with both hands, correct techniques of passing, and correct shooting form. They will be introduced to different styles of defense and participate in daily scrimmages.

Beginners Cheerleading Camp - Coach English

During a week of cheerleading camp, campers will learn the basics of cheerleading. They will learn stunting, tumbling, motions, jumps, dances, and cheers. Campers do not need to have cheer experience. Just wear athletic attire, and bring a water bottle and a snack. At the end of the week parents are invited to come and watch what the children have learned throughout the week.

Crew Camps- Coach Cristi Peterson-Skeels

Novice camp
Campers will learn the basics of the sport of rowing. They will receive instruction on rowing machines as well as in boats. Each day will also include some pool time to cool off. On Friday, we will hold mini-races in front of our dock and parents are welcome to come watch!

Returning camp
Campers will spend their time honing their sculling skills. No prior experience in sculling is required, although one season of rowing is required. All rowing will be in singles and doubles. On Friday, we will hold mini-races in front of our dock and parents are welcome to come watch.

Elementary All-Sports Camp - Coach Kasse Eppley, Coach Richard D'Amico and Coach Tracey Jester

The campers will enjoy a day full of active play learning the fundamentals of such games as soccer, volleyball, softball/baseball, basketball and a variety of other sports through age appropriate lead up games and activities. Each camper will also be able to enjoy the pool for free swim and will receive a half hour of swim instruction each day. In the afternoon each camper will work on an art project dealing with their time at camp that week. Campers will follow a schedule similar to the one listed below.

Fencing Camp- Coach Toro

This camp is for both beginners and established fencers. Students will receive instruction in footwork and technique, take part in fencing drills and games, learn about the history of fencing, and even compete in an in-class fencing tournament!

Golf Camp - Coach Derek DiStefano

Episcopal summer golf camp is designed to improve the games of campers of all abilities. The clinic will include instruction on the full swing and short game, as well as etiquette and course management. Instructors will be PGA Professionals and also will include the golf coaches from Episcopal.  Golf camp will be held at The Golf Club at South Hampton, located at 315 S Hampton Club Way, St. Augustine, FL 32092.   

Ice Skating at Jacksonville Ice and Sportsplex

Campers will receive basic skill instruction which will have them working on the following skills:

Campers ages 5-6: Sit and stand up with skates off ice; Sit and stand up on ice; March in place; March forward, 8-10 steps; March then glide on two feet; Dip in place.

Campers Ages 7-14: Sit and stand on ice; March forward across the ice; Forward two-foot glide; Dip; Forward sizzles, 6-8 in a row; Backward wiggles, 6-8 in a row; Snowplow stop, one foot or both; Rocking horse, 2-3 in a row; Two-foot hop in place (optional).

Episcopal will provide transportation to and from the camp. The cost of skate rentals is included in the cost of the camp.

Girls Lacrosse - Coach Anderson

The summer program will be structured to emphasize on the improvement of stick skills and athleticism of any experience level. The first half of each day will be focused on stick skill development, and the second half will be dedicated to game situation drills and scrimmage play. Players will also have opportunities to participate in fun competitions to earn prizes!

Players will be grouped based on experience levels to maintain a challenging and fun learning experience. All players will need the following equipment to participate: Girls lacrosee stick, protective goggles, mouth guard, running shoes or cleats.

Goalies will also need to include the following: Goalie stick, helmet, gloves, chest pad and padded shorts, shin guards.

Boys Lacrosse Starter Camp- Coach Kelly Hoyt

Episcopal’s lacrosse starter camp is for beginner lacrosse players are ages seven- 14 who have little or no previous lacrosse experience. Beginner lacrosse players will have great fun learning the exhilarating sport of lacrosse. Fast paced and full of action, lacrosse is the ultimate team sport, a unique combination of skill, speed, and agility.

  • Camp sessions are three hours each day
  • Campers will be grouped by age 7-8, 9-11,12-15, & 16+
  • Focus on all basic individual skill sets and fundamentals
  • Team concepts and strategy will be introduced throughout the week
  • Field positions and the skill sets required for those positions
  • Rules of the game as well as important lacrosse terminology

Middle School Football Camp- Coach David Hess

This camp will begin to prepare the players by training in the weight room and on the track. These skills will be tested and the winner at each grade level will receive the Iron Eagle Award at the end of the week. We will work on the fundamentals of blocking, tackling, passing, and catching. We will end the week with a flag football competition.

Middle School Volleyball Camp- Coach Annetta McCoy

Volleyball Camp will be held this summer for new and younger players. Players will serve, pass, and hit their way into the next level of volleyball for the next season. We will play games that will help enhance a young person’s desire to improve his or her game. We welcome all middle school-age (3rd through 8th grade) students to this specialized team camp. Our focus will be on learning and developing good volleyball habits that will last a lifetime. Come one and all and spike, set, and hit!

Pole Vaulting Camp- Coach Pat Crandall

Pole vaulting camp is designed for all levels--beginning to advanced--as you will be working on what YOU need to become a better high school vaulter. Episcopal has dominated state vaulting for a long time and that tradition was built on the foundation of executing the proper mechanics of the most complicated event in track & field. You will learn the event inside and out as you will get personalized feedback on what you're doing. You will also receive a 20-page booklet, which summarizes everything you will need to remember to become the best vaulter you can be.

Boys Soccer Camp at Knight Property- Coach Andy Kidd

Boys attending the Episcopal summer soccer camp will have the opportunity to work with experienced coaches and players, in a one-on-one environment. The camp will be held on Episcopal's Munnerlyn and Knight campuses and will include indoor and outdoor games, lunch in the Buck Student Center, and swimming in the Semmes Aquatic Center.

This five-day camp will hone your athlete's skills and prepare him for future competition. Our coaches will personally work with each athlete, no matter the skill level, to ensure that each one gets the most out of the program.

Girls Soccer Camp - Coach Amber DeVries

Hello my name is Coach Amp I am going into my 5th year of coaching and my 3rd year with ESJ.   For the younger age group we will focus on individual ball skill and creativity. Our main focus for the week will be to see soccer more than just a run back and forth game but to see soccer as a more skilled game. The younger age group will learn ball control and individual improvement. For the older girls, our focus is field awareness and team play. We will focus on passing into space, ball movement, and attacking the goal. This will be more advanced. We will have full day of shooting as well with the main focus of not shooting at the goalie. Overall this will be a lot of fun but we will grow a lot as players.

Softball Camp - Coach Tracy Jester

All players involved in this year's softball camp will learn the skills and fundamentals of the game which include: throwing, catching, fielding, and hitting. They will also learn the basic concepts and strategy of both the offensive and defensive aspects of the game. Towards the end of the week coaches will set up scrimmage situations and games to allow each camper the opportunity to play the game and show off the skills learned at camp.

Swim Camps - Coach Doug Schuster

Beginners camp
This camp is targeted toward swimmers ages six-10. Campers should be able to swim before attending camp. Swimmers will learn basic stroke mechanics of each stroke and also work towards being comfortable in the water. Each day the campers will learn one of the four strokes and play games like sharks and minnows, among others.

Competive camp
This camp is targeted towards swimmers over the age of 10 who are looking to improve their strokes. During the week campers will work on stroke technique and classroom lecture sessions, video taping and stroke analysis, starts and turns, and a fun daytime activity.

Tennis, Gold Camp - Coach Dede Allen

The rules have changed for 10 and under tennis!! Kids learn to play other sports with right sized equipment. Now, tennis will be learned with kid-sized equipment and kid-sized courts! Balls bounce lower, don't move as fast through the air and are easier to hit. Raquets are sized for small hands and courts are smaller and easier to cover. That means kids will have more fun and less frustration. They're playing real tennis and having real fun - and that's what is most important.

This camp is designed to introduce the game of tennis using the USTA 10-and-Under Tennis format. It will cover basic tennis skills, eye-hand coordination and motor skills, rules and introduce competition. Tennis camps will be led by USTA National Trainer and Episcopal Tennis Program Director, Dede Allen.

Tennis, Maroon Camp - Coach Dede Allen

This camp is designed for kids ages 11 and up who are just starting tennis to the intermediate level. This will prepare them for the next level of play. This is designed for players wishing to enter Grand Prix tournaments or play Junior Team Tennis. We will cover rules, sport skills, fitness, singles and doubles strategy, and competition. Tennis camps will be led by USTA National Trainer and Episcopal Tennis Program Director, Dede Allen.

Volleyball Camp- Coach John Dwyer

Episcopal's volleyball camp focuses on volleyball's most important skills. Forearm passing, setting, serving, attacking, and digging are all covered and drilled leading up to combination drills (passing and setting, serving and passing). Mini games that focus on particular skills are played, including a 6-on-6 tournament the final day.

Warrior Lacrosse Camp

Warrior lacrosse camps were developed to provide young athletes with an opportunity to become better lacrosse players by learning from the best coaches and players in the game today. Our goal at GameBreaker Lacrosse Camps is to help you keep improving, no matter what your ability level, through great coaching and healthy competition. We focus on giving each camper individual attention.

Every GameBreaker Lacrosse Camp will feature Ten Skill Clinics to help each player develop all facets of their game, including:

Yoga Camp - Instructor Janice Gurny

Age appropriate classes on yoga basics and expansion of current yoga practice. Come prepared to learn the foundational asanas (postures) of yoga, the benefits of expanding a current yoga practice, and an opportunity to meet old friends and make new friends.

Sessions will focus on building strength and balance, coordination and flexibility, while raising awareness of your own uniqueness and greatness. Regardless of your sport of choice, yoga can add a deepened and supportive dimension. The practice and principles of yoga are life-long. Balance and symmetry, effort and ease are essential. The benfits of yoga expand beyond the classroom. Join us for a fun experience of sharing the yoga journey!

Each Yoga camp will be taught by Janice Gurny and will be held in the sixth grade center. Each camp must have a minimum of 5 participants, and a maximum of 15 for the middle school camp and a maximum of 20 for the two-week camps. Please note that the adult Yoga camp will not meet on June 19th.

Eagle Arts Fine Arts Camp

Eagle Arts faculty and staff: Eagle Arts Director Sally Maguire Deming, Missy Ponder-Reston, Jim Deming, Mary Helen Solomon, Katie Black, Mary Maguire, Jim Solomon, Johny Pettegrew, Julia Daze, Debbie Higgins and hand-selected counselors and fine-arts alumni.

Eagle Arts Fine Arts Camp is for ages 6-14, from June 11-22 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. This year's theme is "I am who I am." 

Note: Campers should bring towels and swimsuits for a daily refreshing break in Episcopal’s Semmes Aquatic Center . A swim test will be given the first day.

Age groups
Campers will be placed in one of three age groups. Because we recognize that each child has individual talents and skills, our Eagle Arts faculty and staff will utilize and celebrate campers’ individual gifts.

Ages 6-7
These campers will have a safe and exciting experience with hands-on learning, performing, and group interaction packed full of fun. Discover talents in music (Orff), musical theatre, creative dramatics, movement, arts & crafts, and storytelling.

Ages 8-10
These campers will work with our professional directors in dance, musical theatre, Orff, theatre, arts & crafts, and mime. This is a camp where campers come together to create! 

Ages 11-14
Older Campers will hone skills in dance, musical theatre, Orff, theatre, arts & crafts, improvisation, and create believable characters from stories that come to life. Performers will participate in daily motivational and inspirational seminars to enhance these skills.

Eagle Arts Master Classes

Classes will be offered in dance & movement, theatre arts, vocal choral study, and Orff studies. Older campers, ages 11 through 18, will pick a major in which to concentrate to improve their skills and technique. The emphasis is on daily workshop master classes concentrating on the artistic process rather than the end product--no showcase this week! An Episcopal School of Jacksonville instructor and guest artist will conduct these week-long intensives. Space is limited.

Cooking Camp with Chef Charles

"All cooking begins with one's passion for and knowledge of a particular cuisine... If you want to learn the palate archetypes, you have to be on an exploration - and it has to be a long journey, not a short one." -- Barbara Tropp, The Modern Art of Chinese Cooking

Learn kitchen fundamentals and essentials such as knife skills and cooking methods (sauteing, searing, raosting, baking, etc.) to complete basic functions throughout the kitchen, while building your knowledge of ingredients and flavors. Students will be encouraged to put on an apron and take part in all the aspects of preparing the meal and learn through hands-on practical application, preceded by a thorough demonstration.

Deep Sea Fishing Camp

Deep Sea fishing Charter out of Mayport. Parents are welcome to attend on this trip and the cost is $110 per person, which also includes the tip for Captain and crew. Arrival time is 6:15a.m. and the boat leaves Mayport at 7:00a.m. and returns at 4:00p.m. There is an age restriction of age 6 and older. Fishing Camp - Coach Tracy Jester

Fishing Camp is Back!  This year we have extended the time and added an optional fifth day.  Day 1 all campers will learn how to rig their own lines and practice casting on campus in the ESJ lake fishing for brim, blue gill bass, and catfish.  Day 2 we will take a trip to the Walton Boat House to fish off our dock in Pottsburg creek where we will fish for crocker, red bass, trout and more. On Day 3, we're off to Nassau Sound bridge and on Day 4 we will head to Atlantic Beach to shore fish for catfish, sharks, and whiting. Day 5 is optional, Deep Sea fishing Charter out of Mayport.

For Days 1-4, campers will need to bring their own rods and reels, tackle, water shoes and sun screen.  All bait will be on us!  If you choose to participate in Day 5, we need to know as soon as possible so that we can make a reservation before the boat fills up.  All fishing on Days 1-4 will be catch and release but on Day 5 the catch is all yours, so make sure to bring a cooler with ice for the ride home.  This camp is for all levels from beginner to advanced.

Exploring Game Design

Experience games as complex systems and learn basic game design concepts and mechanics like leveling up, feedback, obstacles, challenge and goal. Create your own games and critique games made by students from around the world. This camp is for rising 6th - 8th graders.

Guitar Camp

For beginning to intermediate players, the guitar camp will be a fun place to learn how to play the guitar.  We'll touch base on a lot of musical styles (blues, rock, pop, country) and we'll learn a variety of techniques, including strumming, flatpicking and finger picking.  We'll also learn a bit of musical theory and how to read charts and tablature, so you can continue to improve and learn on your own.  There will also be time to explore the music you most enjoy and want to learn how to play.  By the end of the week, you should have several songs you'll know well enough to continue practicing on your own.

How to Watch a Movie Camp

The camp will be a fun way to learn more about how movies are made and ways to appreciate the art that goes into them.  The daily schedule will focus on one movie and how it was made.  There will be an overview of the movie, then we will watch the movie, and then we will discuss it.  We will be watching a lot of the extra material that comes with the DVD versions of the movie.  Hopefully, by the end of the week, you'll be able to enjoy movies more than ever by seeing the craft that goes into each one.

Manuscript / Cursive Handwriting

This Manuscript Handwriting Camp is designed to teach manuscript handwriting or provide a solid review and practice of manuscript. Students will complete a Handwriting Without Tears Manuscript workbook. They will participate in fine motor activities to help improve the strength of the intrinsic muscles of the hands that control fine motor coordination (such as skillfully moving a pencil). The class is intended to provide a fun and relaxed environment where students can improve their handwriting skills. The instructor is an Occupational Therapist with 11 years of experience in the school system.

This Cursive Handwriting Camp is designed to teach cursive handwriting or provide a solid review and practice of cursive. Students will complete a Handwriting Without Tears cursive workbook. Paintball Camp

Camper will spend the morning at Goat Farm Paintball. The campers will be dropped off at Episcopal and then driven to the facility by a camp employee. They will spend two hours playing a variety of paintball games including capture the flag, humans vs. gorillas, and VIP. The campers can bring their own guns and ammo or it will be provided for them. They also need to bring a snack and plenty to drink. At the end of the two hours, an Episcopal bus will bring them back to Episcopal.

Ultimate Frisbee Camp

Episcopal's summer ultimate camp will be focused on teaching how to play the sport of ultimate frisbee. Campers will be taught the basic rules along with proper throwing mechanics. There will also be a specific focus on pick-up oriented scrimmages and the spirit of the game so that campers will understand what the ultimate frisbee community is about and how they can pursue continuing to play ultimate after the camp is over.
