San Diego Mission Trip Information – Applications Due November 22

San Diego Mission Trip

Episcopal School of Jacksonville

Traveling: June 14-21, 2020

Dear ESJ students and parents,

It is with tremendous excitement and anticipation that we announce the ESJ 2020 Mission Trip to San Diego, California, this summer.

The Rev. Teresa Seagle, Mary Krombach, and The Rev. Christopher Dell will be leading a mission trip to San Diego, California, from June 14 to June 21, 2020.  We will be working with YouthWorks (youthworks.com) to serve the elderly, homeless, and hungry in San Diego. We will partner with a variety of different social service organizations. We will also experience the Latino culture of San Diego, and one evening, we will walk to the Mexican border. We will learn about the history of the border from an organization that works to provide justice for immigrants. In addition, we will attend a bilingual church service and enjoy a cookout with community friends.

Students may serve all or part of the week at a food shelf, clothing distribution center, soup kitchen or elder care facility.  Our days will include morning and evening devotionals as well as worship experiences with the residents of San Diego.  We will know our specific itinerary relative to their needs as we get closer to our departure date.

YouthWorks, a Christian organization, plans and organizes many mission trip groups throughout the year.  We will be staying at a church or school in San Diego near where we will be serving each day. We will eat breakfast and dinner there on most days.  We will pack our own lunches each day to eat at our mission sites.

We will take up to 20 students on the mission trip.  Mission trip applications are attached, and are due by November 22, 2019. All current ESJ 8th through 12th graders are invited to apply. Students accepted for the mission trip must be of sound character and mature enough to be able to handle the responsibility and trust which we will place in them. Their attendance record, teacher recommendations, and approval from the school Honor and Discipline Councils will also play a part in the selection process.  Please note that applicants will be accepted on a first-come-first-serve basis.

The cost of the trip will be approximately $1,900.  We are still finalizing the price of flights and ground transportation, but we hope to keep the cost below this. The cost of the trip includes airfare, room and meals, all ground transportation in San Diego, emergency medical insurance, ESJ chaperone accompaniment, and the cost of an additional excursion in the San Diego area.

If you would like to be a part of the ESJ San Diego Mission Trip, please complete the application and family commitment statement and submit them to The Rev. Teresa Seagle by November 22, 2019, along with a $600 deposit.  Please make checks out to the Episcopal School of Jacksonville – memo: San Diego Mission Trip.  This $600 deposit will go toward the overall program cost, but will not be reimbursed if you decide to withdraw after the application deadline. The remaining balance ($1,300) for the trip is due in February 28, 2020.  If you have any further questions or would like to submit your application via email, please feel free to reach me at: [email protected]

Thank you for taking the time to fill out the attached applications, and be assured that further details will follow once the application process has been completed.

Sincerely,

The Rev. Teresa Seagle
Dean of Spiritual Life and Service
