The Cheerleading Program is made up of a Middle School team, a Junior Varsity team, and a Varsity team. Episcopal Varsity Cheerleading team is an integral part of promoting school spirit. These young ladies also serve as Episcopal ambassadors to the community by volunteering each year for Buddy Walk, breast cancer walks, and charity drives such as the H.O.O.I. orphanages and the Donna Hicken Foundation. In addition to working hard on the sidelines and at pep rallies, Varsity Cheerleading has earned two District titles for competitive cheer. The Cheerleading Program is under the direction of Coach Melissa Durso.
About the Coach
Melissa Durso is in her first year as program director of cheerleading at ESJ. She started at ESJ last year as the assistant varsity coach. She is looking forward to bringing change to the cheerleading program and to create a new look for the team in her role as head coach and program director. Originally from New Jersey, Melissa has cheered her entire life. During her time in New Jersey, Coach Mel cheered for Comet All Stars, winning six national titles and multiple local titles. She received seven varsity letters for her high school cheer team, and was awarded a captain position and a MVP award her senior year. Before she moved to Florida, she was the head cheerleading coach at Montgomery High School where she led the team to their first finals finish in school history. Her favorite aspects of cheerleading are the ability cheerleaders have to lead and motivate the crowd and the confidence and pride the sport instills in our athletes. She enjoys teaching the progressions of stunting and tumbling. Not only does she coach for ESJ, she is also a proud coach at Rockstar Cheer Jax, working alongside Nathan Palmer (Assistant Varsity Coach) and Michelle Rawls (Middle School Coach). When she is not coaching, she works as a third grade school teacher in Duval County.
